Aquarius is the 11th sign of the zodiac, running from about January 20 to February 18, an Air sign of the fixed mode. It is the sign of independent thinking and the collective ideal: thinking differently, refusing to be boxed in, dreaming of a fairer world. It changed rulers with modern astrology, and that change has concrete effects on how a chart is read. The case of Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), whose Saturn sits in this sign, shows it precisely.
Ptolemy (Tetrabiblos, book I, chapter 17) assigns to Saturn the two signs opposite the houses of the luminaries, Capricorn and Aquarius, cold and wintry signs. Lilly specifies that Aquarius is Saturn's day house and the sign where he “rejoiceth” (Christian Astrology, book I, chapter 8), and calls it “the principal house of Saturn” (chapter 16). In tradition, then, Saturn in Aquarius holds both domicile and, by day, the triplicity of Air: Ptolemy (chapter 18) entrusts this triangle to Saturn by day, because of his sect, and to Mercury by night.
Modern astrology assigned the sign to Uranus, discovered in 1781. AstralPro follows this rulership throughout: Uranus in Aquarius is in domicile, Saturn in Aquarius no longer has a domicile there, and a house whose cusp falls in Aquarius has Uranus as ruler.
Aquarius is the last of the four signs Ptolemy calls “solid” (chapter 11), those where the season that began in the previous sign, here the cold of winter, is felt more firmly: hence the fixed mode. Valens (Anthology, book I, chapter 2) calls it masculine, solid and of human shape; Lilly, airy, hot and moist, fixed, rational, human, masculine.
Modern reading sees in it a free mind that holds to its convictions. You work through ideas and ideals, you question what is taken for granted, and your freedom of thought comes before almost everything.
In love, you look first for a partner in crime who respects your singularity, and the trap is retreating into your head to escape intensity. At work, you invent and reform: technology, research, science, the nonprofit world. Your lesson: ground your ideas in reality and connect the head to the heart.
Opposite Aquarius stands Leo, the domicile of the Sun: the Sun is therefore in detriment in Aquarius, in Lilly, who gives it Leo as its only house and Aquarius as its detriment (chapter 11), as in AstralPro. None of the seven traditional planets is exalted or in fall there. The Dignity column of the positions table can therefore show only two words for this sign: “Domicile” for Uranus, “Detriment” for the Sun; any other planet gets a dash.
The change of ruler also moves a detriment. Lilly defines detriment as the sign opposite one of a planet's houses: tradition therefore put Saturn in detriment in Leo, opposite Aquarius. AstralPro, for which Saturn rules only Capricorn, gives him a detriment only in Cancer, and it is Uranus that is in detriment in Leo.
The decan by element takes Aquarius through the three Air signs: from 0° to 10°, Aquarius, sub-ruler Uranus; from 10° to 20°, Gemini, sub-ruler Mercury; from 20° to 30°, Libra, sub-ruler Venus. In chapter I, the decan paragraph of a planet in Aquarius carries one of these three names. Al-Biruni's Indian table (Book of Instruction in the Elements of the Art of Astrology, 1029, §451) follows the same path with Saturn at the head: Saturn, Mercury, Venus.
The Chaldean faces give Venus, Mercury and the Moon (al-Biruni, same table; Lilly likewise assigns 11° to 20° Aquarius to Mercury and 21° to 30° to the Moon). Only the middle slice has the same ruler in both systems.
Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), has her Saturn at 23°53' Aquarius, in the 3rd house. A traditional astrologer would read it in domicile. Her report calls it peregrine: no domicile under modern rulership, neither exaltation nor fall, and no triplicity, since Camille was born at night and nocturnal Air belongs to Mercury. The positions table shows a dash.
The technical paragraph of its block may therefore open with “In the 3rd decan (sub-ruler Venus, Libra) in Mars terms”. For a traditional astrologer, this Saturn would be its own dispositor; in the report, the chain runs through Uranus.
In Camille's chart, Aquarius holds no cusp. The 3rd house begins at 22°06' Capricorn and the 4th house at 0°15' Pisces: the whole of Aquarius is lodged in the 3rd house. Uranus, its ruler, therefore rules no house in the chart, and the House cusps table names it nowhere in its Ruler column. AstralPro sticks to its rule, one ruler per house, that of the sign on the cusp, without giving a second ruler to the house that contains the intercepted sign.
The sign is still present through other points: Pallas at 24°10' Aquarius and Éros at 10°25' Aquarius, both in the 3rd house, and the progressed Moon, at 12°30' Aquarius on October 1, 2026. Camille's dominants give only 6% to Air: Saturn contributes, but a lone planet weighs little against six bodies in Scorpio.
