Gemini is the third sign of the zodiac, an Air sign of the mutable mode, running from about May 21 to June 20 depending on the year. It is the sign of curiosity, of speech and of the links between ideas. In a chart, it is also read through its ruler, Mercury, through the planet that works against the grain there, Jupiter, and through its three decans. One peculiarity: none of the seven traditional planets is exalted there. Here is all of that, with the example of Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), whose Gemini holds a cusp and the South Node.
Ptolemy calls “bicorporeal” the four signs that follow the solid signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces (Tetrabiblos, book I, chapter 11). Set between two states of the weather, they share the natural properties of both, at their end and at their beginning. These are our mutable signs. Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), book I, in the chapter on the nature of the twelve signs, makes Gemini an airy sign, hot and moist, sanguine, diurnal, “common or double-bodied”, human, western and masculine, the diurnal house of Mercury in the airy triplicity.
The symbol of the twins speaks of this duality: two faces, the ability to see each thing from two angles. Gemini shares Air with Libra and Aquarius, the element of thought and exchange.
You work through thought and speech. Your mind moves fast, picks up everything, links what others leave apart; boredom is your worst enemy. Your strengths: quickness, adaptability, an easy way with people, humor, an ability to learn almost anything fast. Your blind spots: scattering yourself, projects left halfway, a skimming that stays on the surface when you flit too much.
In love, a good conversation draws you more than a beautiful silent gaze; you need play, surprise, a partner who keeps up with your ideas. The trap: staying on the surface for fear of commitment. At work, you are at ease wherever things need explaining, selling or bridging between worlds: journalism, commerce, teaching, marketing. Solitary routine puts you out; your lesson is to choose your priorities and see one thing through before starting three more.
Mercury has its domicile in Gemini, in tradition as in AstralPro. Ptolemy (I, 17) explains that Mercury, which never strays more than one sign from the Sun, was given the two signs next to the houses of the luminaries, Gemini and Virgo.
Jupiter is in detriment there, since Gemini faces Sagittarius. The two systems agree, with one nuance: Lilly puts Jupiter in detriment “in Gemini and Virgo”, opposite his two ancient houses, Sagittarius and Pisces. With modern rulerships, Pisces passes to Neptune, Virgo becomes Neptune's detriment, and Jupiter keeps only Gemini.
Neither exaltation nor fall: none of the seven planets is exalted in Gemini or in Sagittarius, in Ptolemy (I, 19) as in the AstralPro engine. Lilly nevertheless adds to his table an exaltation of the North Node at 3° Gemini, in his chapter on essential dignities. AstralPro does not use it: the North Node stays outside the dignity system, and its data reads “no essential dignity”.
AstralPro's decans follow the element, and their sub-ruler is the modern ruler of the associated sign:
The last third bears the mark of modern rulerships. Al-Biruni, in his Book of Instruction in the Elements of the Art of Astrology (1029, § 451), gives the table of Indian decans, built on the same principle (ruler of the sign, then of the fifth, then of the ninth), but with the ancient rulers: Mercury, Venus, then Saturn, traditional ruler of Aquarius. A body at 25° Gemini therefore has Uranus as sub-ruler in your report, Saturn in that table.
The Chaldean faces differ on all three thirds: Jupiter, Mars, then the Sun (al-Biruni, § 449). The report writes none of them; when you read “decan” there, it is the decan by element.
Camille Morel has no natal planet in Gemini. The sign holds the cusp of her 8th house, at 15°40' Gemini, and her cusps table gives it Mercury as ruler. That Mercury is at 6°37' Scorpio, in the 12th house, retrograde; it also rules her 10th house, whose cusp is in Virgo, Mercury's other domicile. What belongs to the 8th house, shared resources, intimacy, transformations, thus runs through a discreet planet placed in the house of what goes on behind the scenes.
Her data weighs this Mercury with care: one testimony for, its conjunction within 1° of Venus (orb 0°07'), and several against, peregrine, in the 12th house, retrograde, under the Sun's beams, rising before it.
The sign returns in the Karmic Chart. The South Node, the exact opposite of the North Node at 3°00' Sagittarius, falls in Gemini, in the 7th house, and its ruler is that same Mercury. A single planet thus links the 8th house, the 10th house and the axis of the Nodes.
The “House cusps” table (House, Position, Sign, Ruler) tells you which houses begin in Gemini; their ruler is always Mercury. For Camille, the line reads “House 8: 15°40' Gemini, ruler Mercury”. In chapter IV, Life Domains, the Money & resources section draws on the 2nd and 8th houses; for her, the aspect commented on is Jupiter sextile MC (orb 0°35').
If you have a planet in Gemini, the Dignity column of your positions table shows “Domicile” for Mercury, “Detriment” for Jupiter, and a dash for all the others, since the sign has neither exaltation nor fall. The decan paragraph in the planet's block, in chapter I, then specifies its third and its sub-ruler: Mercury, Venus or Uranus.
A sign that is empty at birth can also fill up in a given year: in Camille's 2026 Solar Return, Uranus is at 4°10' Gemini, retrograde, in the 7th house of the return.
