The karmic chart: South Node, Saturn and Lilith

By Dorian Grimault, astrologer · Published · updated

The karmic reading looks at your chart from behind: what is already there, what repeats, what asks to be settled. In your natal report, it takes up chapter III, "Karmic Chart". It does not rest on a different chart, but on a selection of points from the natal chart, read from this retrospective angle. This entry details the points AstralPro keeps, the exact rules that decide what appears, and the way the chapter is built.

A reading turned towards the past

Karmic astrology developed in the 20th century, in the wake of psychological astrology and of what is now called evolutionary astrology. It takes up long-known points, the lunar nodes, Saturn, the Black Moon, and reads them as a memory: acquired assets, old habits, lessons that come back.

Schools vary a great deal. Some speak literally of past lives, others make it a symbolic reading of the repetitions within one life. AstralPro keeps a precise register: memory, inheritance, debt, repetition, what weighs and remains to be settled. The chapter stays retrospective from start to finish. The direction in which you grow belongs to chapter II, and the character portrait to chapter I: chapter III does not repeat them.

The points the engine calculates

Before any writing, the engine prepares a block of data that the text copies without inventing anything:

  • The South Node: sign and house. It is the exact opposite of the North Node, the exact node at birth and not the mean node.
  • Its ruler: the modern ruler of the South Node's sign, with its position, its house and any retrogradation. For a South Node in Scorpio, it will be Pluto, not Mars.
  • Saturn: sign, degree, house.
  • The retrogrades: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Chiron. The Sun and the Moon never are.
  • Lilith (Black Moon): sign, degree, house.
  • Squares to the nodal axis: a planet at 90° from the North Node, and therefore also from the South Node, with an orb of 6° at most. Only the ten bodies from the Sun to Pluto and Chiron are tested: the angles are not.

This block acts as a safeguard: the chapter cannot cite a degree or a house that is not in it. The houses are those of your natal chart, in Placidus, and the first mention of each house comes with its domain, so that you know which area of life is meant.

The sections of chapter III

The chapter opens with a few paragraphs that set the retrospective gaze. Then come, in this order:

  • "The South Node": where your soul comes from, the inherited baggage, then the door through which its ruler expresses it.
  • "Saturn": the debt that returns. Saturn is read there as memory and repetition, not as discipline, which chapter I already covers.
  • "The retrogrades": the energies to take up again, read together. The planet-by-planet detail is reserved for the Book.
  • "Lilith": the memory of rupture, what was cut off or pushed aside.
  • "The knot of tension": only if there is a square to the nodal axis. Without a square, the section does not exist, and the chapter says not a word about it.
  • "What your soul came to settle": the closing, which weaves it all together.

Each section that starts from a position ends with a concrete step. It does not say where to go: it names what can be stopped, given back or set down, and cites the position that justifies it.

The example of Camille Morel

Here are the chapter III data for Camille Morel, AstralPro's example chart (fictional data).

  • South Node in Gemini, house 7, opposite her North Node in Sagittarius, house 1.
  • Ruler of the South Node: Mercury, ruler of Gemini, at 6°37' Scorpio in house 12, retrograde. The baggage of house 7, the house of relationships and face-to-face encounters, expresses itself through a planet hidden in house 12, which turns back on itself.
  • Saturn: 23°53' Aquarius, house 3.
  • Retrogrades: Mercury alone, at 6°37' Scorpio, house 12.
  • Lilith: 14°01' Aries, house 5. The chapter reads it as a memory of rupture in the domain of creation and pleasure, without an explicit sexual reading.
  • Square to the nodal axis: Chiron, at 7°52' Virgo, squares the axis with an orb of 4°52'. The section "The knot of tension" therefore appears in her report.

Her Midheaven, at 0°15' Virgo, also forms a square to the North Node (orb 2°45' in the aspect grid). It does not enter the knot of tension: the angles are not tested for this chapter, and Chiron remains the only square kept.

AstralPro's choices, in short

Three choices set this reading apart from other approaches. First, the ruler of the South Node follows modern rulerships, like the rest of your reports: Uranus for Aquarius, Neptune for Pisces, Pluto for Scorpio. Next, the knot of tension follows a precise threshold, 6°, and is only written if it exists: its absence is never commented on or presented as a quality. Finally, the register stays retrospective, with a vocabulary of memory and settling rather than of mission.

The chapter predicts nothing and does not describe past lives as facts. It offers a symbolic reading of what repeats, based on positions you can find in the positions table, at the start of your report.
