The draconic chart is a second reading of your birth chart, built on a different starting point. Instead of counting the zodiac from the spring equinox, it counts it from the Moon's North Node. All positions slide by the same number of degrees, and the signs change. In your natal report, it takes up chapter II, "Draconic Chart". This entry explains the exact calculation AstralPro applies, what the engine converts and what it leaves aside, then how the chapter is built.
The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent path. Medieval tradition called them the head and the tail of the dragon (caput draconis, cauda draconis), hence the name "draconic". Astronomy still speaks of the draconic month for the time the Moon takes to return to its node.
The draconic chart makes the North Node the new 0° Aries. The whole zodiac turns by the same angle: each body keeps its relative place, but changes sign and degree. The technique was popularised in the 1980s, notably by the British astrologer Pamela Crane. It spread as a reading that complements the natal chart, centred on essence and trajectory rather than on the visible personality.
The engine's formula fits on one line: draconic position = natal position − North Node position, brought back between 0° and 360°. The North Node used is the exact node, calculated at the moment of your birth with its oscillations, and not the smoothed mean node that some astrologers prefer.
Some schools also convert the angles and cusps, or compare the draconic chart with the transits. AstralPro sticks to the positions, where the technique actually changes something: the sign and degree of each body.
The chapter opens with a title page, "Draconic Chart", with the subtitle "Essence · Soul Trajectory". Three short paragraphs set out the calculation, what this reading adds compared with the natal chart and how to read the gap between the two.
Next comes the part "Draconic positions": one card per body, with its draconic position and the calculation shown, so that you can redo the subtraction yourself. Then the "Draconic interpretation": the main draconic configuration, followed by three blocks devoted to the draconic Moon, draconic Saturn and draconic Chiron.
The chapter closes with the "Natal-draconic resonances": a body that clearly changes tone from one chart to the other, a body that stays close to its natal colour, and the main guideline that emerges from the whole. The chapter comments on no aspect of the natal grid: it reads other positions.
All the positions shown come from the engine's calculation, done before the writing: the text copies them, it never recalculates them.
For Camille Morel, AstralPro's example chart (fictional data), the North Node is at 3°00' Sagittarius, that is 243.01° on the full circle. Each position therefore moves back by 243.01°, about eight signs plus three degrees. Her Sun, at 21°55' Scorpio (231.91°), becomes a draconic Sun at 18°54' Pisces: 231.91 − 243.01 = 348.90°.
The Scorpio group stays together, but it moves into Pisces: the same concentration, coloured by another Water sign.
The heart of the draconic reading is the comparison. For each body, you look at its natal sign, then its draconic sign. When the two signs are alike, the body expresses roughly what it carries deep down. When they contrast, the report describes an underlying colour that does not show at first glance.
For Camille, Water dominates in both charts: natal Scorpio slides towards Pisces, more diffuse, more permeable. Her draconic Moon in Pisces and her draconic Saturn in Gemini are read in their own blocks, and so is draconic Chiron in Capricorn. This reading does not replace the natal chart: it lights it from another angle, without prediction, staying anchored in positions you can check.
A useful marker for you: a body's draconic sign tells how far it is from the North Node, counted in 30° slices. A planet conjunct the North Node in the natal chart falls at the very start of draconic Aries, like Camille's Mars. A planet close to the South Node falls at the start of draconic Libra. The draconic chart is therefore also a way of reading each body's relationship to the nodal axis.
