Libra in astrology: Venus, exalted Saturn, decans

By Dorian Grimault, astrologer · Published · updated

Libra is the 7th sign of the zodiac, running from about September 23 to October 22. An Air sign of the cardinal mode, it is ruled by Venus. It is the sign of relationship and measure: a taste for the right agreement, diplomacy, a sense of beauty. This page covers what tradition says about it, with sources, then AstralPro's choices for its dignities and decans, and the way your report reads it, with the example of Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data).

The sign of the autumn equinox

Libra begins when the Sun crosses the autumn equinox. Ptolemy, in book I of the Tetrabiblos (chapter 11), places it with Aries among the two equinoctial signs: when the Sun enters either one, it makes the nights exactly equal to the days. That is where the cardinal mode of modern textbooks comes from: a sign that opens a season.

The sign's name has a history of its own. Ptolemy still uses, alongside the Balance, the older name of “Claws of the Scorpion”; his translator F. E. Robbins notes that the name of the Balance only took hold in the 1st century BCE. Vettius Valens, in the 2nd century (Anthology, book I, chapter 2), describes it as the house of Venus, masculine, equinoctial, airy and of human shape. William Lilly, in 1647 (Christian Astrology, book I, chapter 16), calls it airy, hot and moist, masculine, cardinal, diurnal, and “the chief house of Venus”. Its symbol is the only object in the zodiac: it speaks of the search for balance, justice and measure.

A personality that seeks agreement

Libra works through relationship and a sense of fairness. It weighs the pros and cons, sees every point of view, looks for the compromise that holds for everyone. Beauty and harmony are as necessary to it as the element it shares with Gemini and Aquarius.

  • Your strengths: diplomacy, charm, a sense of justice, listening, a talent for easing tension and bringing people together.
  • Your challenges: indecision, fear of conflict, dependence on how others see you, a tendency to forget yourself to keep the peace.

In love, the relationship is your home ground: you like to charm, to build a refined harmony for two, and you offer a listening ear and a sense of compromise. The trap is dissolving into the other or avoiding necessary disagreements. At work, you excel wherever things need linking, arbitrating, harmonizing or making beautiful: law, mediation, design, human resources, consulting. Your lesson: decide without weighing everything again, and not mistake harmony for avoidance.

Venus at home, Saturn honored

For Libra, the modern rulerships AstralPro uses and tradition say the same thing. Ptolemy (book I, chapter 17) gives Venus, a temperate planet, two “exceedingly fertile” signs, Libra and Taurus. The sign's four dignities are therefore:

  • Domicile: Venus.
  • Detriment: Mars, ruler of Aries, the opposite sign.
  • Exaltation: Saturn.
  • Fall: the Sun.

Ptolemy explains the Sun-Saturn pair by the seasons (chapter 19). The Sun, exalted in Aries where the length of the day and its heat begin to grow, has its depression in Libra for the opposite reason; Saturn, a cold planet, takes the reverse course, for where heat decreases, cold increases. Lilly places the Sun's fall at 19° Libra. AstralPro does not use that degree: it reads exaltation and fall by sign, and Lilly himself grants a planet the dignity of exaltation whether or not it is near the exact degree (book I, chapter 18).

One nuance for Mars: Lilly puts him in detriment in Libra and Taurus, the signs opposite his two houses. AstralPro, which gives him only Aries, keeps only Libra. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto have no dignity in this sign.

Venus, Uranus, Mercury: three 10° slices

AstralPro calculates decans by element. Each 10° slice points to an Air sign, and its sub-ruler is the modern ruler of that sign:

  • 1st decan (0° to 10°): Libra, sub-ruler Venus;
  • 2nd decan (10° to 20°): Aquarius, sub-ruler Uranus;
  • 3rd decan (20° to 30°): Gemini, sub-ruler Mercury.

The principle is old. Al-Biruni, in his Book of Instruction in the Elements of the Art of Astrology (written in Ghazni in 1029, §451), describes the Indian decans: the first is ruled by the lord of the sign, the second by that of the fifth sign, the third by that of the ninth. His table gives Venus, Saturn and Mercury for Libra: the same sequence as AstralPro, except that Saturn, traditional ruler of Aquarius, stands in the place of Uranus.

The Greek and Persian tradition follows another system, the faces, distributed in the Chaldean order of the planets starting from Aries (§449). For Libra, al-Biruni and Lilly give the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter. AstralPro keeps the faces only to weigh the degree of the Ascendant; the decan in your report is always the decan by element.

What your report shows

The sign first appears in the positions table: a planet in Libra shows its degree, its house and, in the Dignity column, “Domicile” for Venus, “Exaltation” for Saturn, “Detriment” for Mars, “Fall” for the Sun; any other planet gets only a dash. In chapter I, each planet's block gives a paragraph to its dignity, then a sentence to its decan and term, in the form “In the 2nd decan (sub-ruler Uranus, Aquarius)”.

Libra also counts in the dominants: a body placed in this sign adds its score to Air and to the cardinal mode. Finally, the House cusps table (House, Position, Sign and Ruler columns) shows which houses begin in Libra: their ruler is Venus, and it is the condition of Venus that colors those domains in chapter IV, Life Domains.

Camille: a Libra with no planets, two cusps

Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), has no planet in Libra. The sign is not absent for all that: it holds two cusps, that of the 11th house at 2°12' Libra and that of the 12th house at 26°43' Libra. The cusps table therefore lists Venus as ruler of both, and Venus also rules the 7th house, whose cusp is in Taurus.

Three domains thus run through a single planet, and that planet is not at home: Camille's Venus is at 6°30' Scorpio, in the 12th house, in detriment. The friendships and shared projects of the 11th house, the inner life of the 12th house and the partnership of the 7th house are read through a Venus who loves on the ground of intensity rather than of ease. Since Camille was born at night, this Venus is also “in sect”: her help is said to come more freely and generously.

Libra comes back by other routes. Saturn, at 23°53' Aquarius, is in the 3rd decan of its sign, sub-ruler Venus, Libra. The asteroid Juno sits at 12°27' Libra, in the 11th house. And in the positions table of her 2026 Solar Return, Venus is at 22°52' Libra, in the 11th house: for that year, she occupies one of her domiciles.
