In your birth chart, each planet occupies a sign, and that sign is not neutral to it. Some signs welcome it as if it were at home, others place it on ground that pushes the opposite way. Domicile and detriment are the two poles of this relationship, and the first pair in the system of essential dignities. This page explains where they come from, which table AstralPro uses, and how you find them in your report, with the example of Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data).
In the astrological tradition, every sign has a ruler: the planet that has its domicile there. In that sign it has all its means and acts according to its nature, without having to negotiate with the sign. The opposite sign is its detriment, also called exile: there the planet works on ground whose values are the reverse of its own.
The scheme inherited from Hellenistic astrology, then fixed by Ptolemy, shares the twelve signs among the seven planets visible to the naked eye. The Sun and the Moon have a single domicile (Leo, Cancer). Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have two each, arranged as mirror images on either side of the Cancer-Leo axis. After the discovery of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, modern astrology gave them Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio, taken from Saturn, Jupiter and Mars.
AstralPro uses the modern rulerships, everywhere and without exception: a single table serves the positions table, the house rulers, the dispositors and the receptions. The domiciles are as follows:
Detriment is always the sign opposite the modern domicile. Venus is in detriment in Scorpio and in Aries, Mercury in Sagittarius and in Pisces, Mars in Libra, Jupiter in Gemini, Saturn in Cancer, Uranus in Leo, Neptune in Virgo, Pluto in Taurus, the Sun in Aquarius and the Moon in Capricorn.
This choice has consequences you need to know to read your table. A Mars in Scorpio, a Jupiter in Pisces or a Saturn in Aquarius, in domicile for the tradition, have no domicile here. Conversely, Mars is not in detriment in Taurus, nor Jupiter in Virgo, nor Saturn in Leo, although the tradition said they were. A note placed under the positions table recalls this in every report.
The positions table, at the start of the natal report, has a Dignity column. A planet in domicile is marked “Domicile” there, in gold; a planet in detriment, “Detriment”, in red. A planet with none of the four dignities carries only a dash, and it is the text that calls it peregrine.
In Chapter I, each planet has its own block, and one of the paragraphs of that block is reserved for dignity: it says which one and what it changes for that particular planet. Domicile is not presented there as a good grade: it describes a function that expresses itself without an intermediary. Detriment is not a condemnation there: it describes a function that takes a detour, and often draws a particular depth from it.
Domicile also carries weight elsewhere. In the calculation of the dominants, a planet in domicile receives 2 extra points; detriment takes nothing away. And a planet in domicile is its own dispositor, which often makes it the anchor of a whole group of planets.
Camille has six planets in Scorpio, Pluto included, and her Ascendant at 15°59' Scorpio. Her Pluto stands at 25°17' Scorpio, in house 1: this is its modern domicile, and the table shows “Domicile”. The consequences follow one another. Pluto rules Scorpio, and therefore Camille's house 1, and it sits there. It is the dispositor of her Sun, her Moon, her Mercury, her Venus and her Jupiter, all in Scorpio, and it is its own dispositor. The calculation of the dominants puts it at the top of the planets (score 10.0).
Domicile does not sum up its whole condition: the same line of data flags it as combust, 3°23' from the Sun. A dignity describes a planet's means in its sign, and other conditions come to qualify it.
Notice also what the report does not write. Mars, which the tradition made the ruler of Scorpio, plays no ruling role here. Camille's Mars, at 3°38' Sagittarius, has none of the four dignities anyway.
Venus is at 6°30' Scorpio, in house 12. Scorpio faces Taurus, one of its two domiciles: the table shows “Detriment”. On this point tradition and modern rulerships agree, Venus is in detriment in Scorpio in both systems.
In Venus's block, the dignity paragraph says what detriment changes: a Venus that seeks neither easy agreement nor surface harmony, and that loves on ground where commitment matters more than pleasantness. Since Camille's chart is nocturnal, her Venus is also said to be “in sect”, with freer and more generous help. Detriment and sect do not cancel each other out: dignity speaks of means, sect of condition, and the two are read together.
In Camille's chart, Venus rules houses 7, 11 and 12, which it connects from house 12 where it sits. This is the whole point of detriment in a reading: it tells in what state a planet arrives at the areas it rules.
