Capricorn in astrology: Saturn, exalted Mars, Earth decans

Capricorn begins at the winter solstice. Ptolemy (Tetrabiblos, book I, chapter 11) makes it one of the two solstitial signs, along with Cancer: as the Sun enters them, it turns and reverses its course in latitude, bringing summer in Cancer and winter in Capricorn. Hence its cardinal mode.

Vettius Valens (Anthology, book I, chapter 2) calls it the house of Saturn, feminine, tropical, earthy and of double nature, which its image of a goat with a fish's tail evokes. Lilly (Christian Astrology, book I, chapter 16) describes it as nocturnal, cold, dry, melancholic, earthy, feminine, solstitial, cardinal, and “the exaltation of Mars”.

Capricorn is credited with a sense of effort and the long term. You know how to wait, take the blows, persevere; you do not believe in shortcuts, and behind your reserve stands a tenacious will.

• Your strengths: discipline, reliability, a healthy ambition, patience, a maturity that inspires trust.
• Your challenges: harshness toward yourself, pessimism, trouble easing up, a tendency to carry everything alone.

In love, you open up slowly but you choose in order to build: you prove things through actions more than words, and the trap is hiding your emotions behind duty. At work, you are a builder: management, leadership, law, architecture, anything that calls for rigor and endurance. Your lesson: delegate, and allow yourself to enjoy what you have built.

• Domicile: Saturn. Ptolemy (chapter 17) gives Saturn, a planet in which cold prevails and the farthest from the luminaries, the two signs opposite Cancer and Leo, Capricorn and Aquarius, cold and wintry signs. Lilly makes it his night house (book I, chapter 8) and grants him five essential dignities there (chapter 18). AstralPro keeps Capricorn for Saturn and takes Aquarius away from him, giving it to Uranus.
• Detriment: the Moon, ruler of Cancer, the opposite sign; Lilly also gives her Capricorn as her detriment.
• Exaltation: Mars. According to Ptolemy (chapter 19), Mars, fiery by nature, becomes even more so in Capricorn, where he is farthest to the south. Lilly places this peak at 28°.
• Fall: Jupiter, exalted in Cancer, where he reaches his most northern point and brings the fertile north winds.

AstralPro takes up these four assignments, without the degrees: a Mars at 2° Capricorn is exalted just as much as a Mars at 28°. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto have no dignity in this sign.

That leaves triplicity, that of Earth. Ptolemy (chapter 18) entrusts this triangle of three feminine signs to Venus by day and to the Moon by night, and AstralPro uses these two rulers. A Moon in Capricorn in a night chart is therefore both in detriment and triplicity ruler: the report shows only the detriment, with the triplicity held in reserve.

AstralPro's decan by element points to the three Earth signs: from 0° to 10°, Capricorn, sub-ruler Saturn; from 10° to 20°, Taurus, sub-ruler Venus; from 20° to 30°, Virgo, sub-ruler Mercury. Since Earth has no modern ruler, the sequence matches al-Biruni's Indian table (Book of Instruction in the Elements of the Art of Astrology, 1029, §451): Saturn, Venus, Mercury.

The Chaldean faces give Jupiter, Mars and the Sun, in that order, in al-Biruni as in Lilly. In the engine they serve only to weigh the degree of the Ascendant; the decan paragraph in your report never names them.

A planet in Capricorn appears in the positions table with its degree and house; the Dignity column shows “Domicile” for Saturn, “Exaltation” for Mars, “Detriment” for the Moon, “Fall” for Jupiter, a dash for the others. In chapter I, its block gives a paragraph to that dignity, then a sentence to the decan, along the lines of “In the 2nd decan (sub-ruler Venus, Taurus)”. The Dispositors section sends it back to Saturn. In the dominants, it counts toward Earth and the cardinal mode; a planet in domicile gains 2 points there, an exalted planet 1.5. Finally, a house whose cusp falls in Capricorn has Saturn as ruler in the House cusps table.

Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), has two planets in Capricorn: Uranus at 19°10' and Neptune at 18°56', both in the 2nd house. Neither has a dignity in this sign: the report calls them peregrine. They are in the 2nd decan, sub-ruler Venus, Taurus, and in Venus terms (14-22°). Their dispositor is Saturn, which is at 23°53' Aquarius, in the 3rd house.

They are conjunct within 0°15'. The report calculates this aspect but does not comment on it: pairs of two slow planets are left out of the selection, because a whole generation shares them. What matters for Camille are their links to personal points, such as the Sun's sextile to Uranus (2°44'), picked in chapter IV for Professional life, or Neptune's sextile to the Ascendant (2°57').

Capricorn also holds the cusp of the 3rd house, at 22°06'. Its ruler, Saturn, sits in that very house: the domain of exchanges and learning is ruled from within. The planets that could have a dignity here are elsewhere: Mars at 3°38' Sagittarius, Jupiter at 0°50' Scorpio, the Moon at 27°09' Scorpio. In her 2026 Solar Return, on the other hand, it is the Moon that moves into Capricorn, at 16°57', in the 2nd house.
