Cancer in astrology: the Moon, exalted Jupiter, decans

By Dorian Grimault, astrologer · Published · updated

Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac, a Water sign of the cardinal mode, running from about June 21 to July 22, starting at the summer solstice. It is the sign of sensitivity, memory and home. It is also one of the richest in dignities: the Moon is at home there, Jupiter is exalted, Saturn is in detriment and Mars in fall. This page covers its character, its dignities, its three decans and its place in a report, with the example of Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), in whose chart Cancer works through a Moon in Scorpio.

Tenderness, memory and a shell

You work through emotion and intuition. You pick up the atmosphere before the words, you sense what the other person feels, you remember every kindness received and every hurt. Your strengths: empathy, loyalty to your own people, a gift for care, a faithfulness that stands every test. Your blind spots: touchiness, withdrawing or sulking, difficulty letting go of the past, a need for security that can turn into dependence.

In love, to love is to protect: you look for a bond that lasts and you make home a refuge. The trap is losing yourself in giving, or clinging out of fear of being abandoned. At work, you feel a team's climate and carry projects with quiet perseverance; care, education, hospitality, real estate or food suit you. Cold or aggressive environments wear you down; your lesson is to protect your sensitivity without cutting yourself off from others. The crab sums it all up: a shell outside, great tenderness within.

The sign where the Sun turns back

Ptolemy counts Cancer among the two solstitial signs (Tetrabiblos, book I, chapter 11): at the start of this sign, the Sun reverses its course in latitude and brings summer. In chapter 17, he explains why the Moon has her house there: Cancer and Leo are the most northern signs, the closest to our zenith and therefore the warmest, and they were given to the two luminaries, Leo, masculine, to the Sun, Cancer, feminine, to the Moon.

Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), book I, in the chapter on the nature of the twelve signs, calls it “the only house of the Moon”, the first sign of the watery triplicity, cold and moist, phlegmatic, feminine, nocturnal, movable, solstitial, fruitful and northern. Cancer is cardinal like Aries, Libra and Capricorn: behind its gentleness, it initiates.

Four planets involved

  • The Moon, in domicile: her only domicile, in every system.
  • Saturn, in detriment. Cancer faces Capricorn. Ptolemy (I, 17) gave Saturn, a cold planet and the farthest from the luminaries, the signs opposite Cancer and Leo. Modern rulerships take Aquarius away from him but leave him Capricorn: his detriment in Cancer is the same in both systems.
  • Jupiter, in exaltation. For Ptolemy (I, 19), Jupiter, which produces the fertile north winds, reaches its most northern position in Cancer and brings its power to its height there. Lilly too calls him “exalted in Cancer”.
  • Mars, in fall. Ptolemy sets him against Jupiter: Mars, fiery by nature, is exalted in Capricorn, where he is farthest south, and depressed in Cancer.

No modern planet has a dignity there. Like the three other cardinal signs, Cancer involves four planets, the most the system allows. A Mars in Cancer therefore shows “Fall” in the Dignity column, a Jupiter “Exaltation”, a Saturn “Detriment”. Triplicity adds a nuance for Mars: as nocturnal ruler of Water in AstralPro, he receives it in a night chart, but it stays unspoken on his line, since he already carries a fall. This is one of the four cases where triplicity is held in reserve.

Moon, Pluto, Neptune: Cancer in three thirds

By element, with the modern ruler of the associated sign as sub-ruler, the decans of Cancer give:

  • 1st decan (0° to 10°): Cancer, sub-ruler Moon;
  • 2nd decan (10° to 20°): Scorpio, sub-ruler Pluto;
  • 3rd decan (20° to 30°): Pisces, sub-ruler Neptune.

This is one of the signs where modern rulerships change the result the most. Al-Biruni, in his Book of Instruction in the Elements of the Art of Astrology (1029, § 451), describes the same principle among the Indians, the ruler of the sign, then that of the fifth sign, then that of the ninth, but with the ancient rulers: his table gives the Moon, Mars and Jupiter, the traditional rulers of Scorpio and Pisces.

The Chaldean faces, in the neighboring table (§ 449), give Venus, Mercury and the Moon. None of AstralPro's sub-rulers matches the face of the same rank; only the Moon of the first third is shared with the Indian table. Your report writes only the decan by element.

Camille: a Cancer read through her Moon

Camille Morel has no natal planet in Cancer. The sign holds the cusp of her 9th house, at 22°06' Cancer, opposite the cusp of her 3rd house, at 22°06' Capricorn. The ruler of the 9th house is the Moon, and it is through her that Cancer is read in her chart.

This Moon is at 27°09' Scorpio, in the 1st house, in fall, since Scorpio faces Taurus, the sign of her exaltation. She is also the sect light, the one that leads her night chart. The 9th house, that of distant horizons, studies and convictions, thus runs through an intense and restrained Moon, lodged in the house of the person herself.

Cancer also colors three of her bodies through the decans. Her Sun (21°55'), her Moon (27°09') and her Pluto (25°17') are in the 3rd decan of Scorpio, whose associated sign is Cancer: their sub-ruler is the Moon. Among her celestial points, Chariklo is at 20°07' Cancer, in the 8th house, retrograde.

Cancer in the report's tables

In Camille's cusps table, the line reads “House 9: 22°06' Cancer, ruler Moon”. In her positions table, her Moon shows “Fall”; in chapter I, the decan paragraph for her Sun, her Moon or her Pluto may open with “In the 3rd decan (sub-ruler Moon, Cancer)”, followed by the term.

If you have a planet in Cancer yourself, start with the Dignity column: four planets show something there. Then look at the house occupied and the decan paragraph. And if a cusp falls in Cancer, look for your Moon: her position, sign and dignity tell you how that house's domain is channeled.
