The 9th house is the one that carries you far: convictions, studies, travel, whatever lies beyond the familiar horizon. Tradition first placed it under the sign of the sacred, before adding books and foreign lands. It also has a peculiarity in AstralPro reports: none of the thirteen life domains takes it as a starting point. This page explains why it still matters, and reads it in the chart of Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data).
For Firmicus Maternus, the 9th house is not one of the weak places. After the four angles, he names four “second” places, which hold the next degree of power: the Goddess (place 3), the God (place 9), Good Fortune (place 5) and the Good Daimon (place 11) (Mathesis, II, 16). The God faces the Goddess, and prevails over her (II, 18).
His description is brief: it is the place of the Sun god; in it are found the schools of thought of men, religions and journeys abroad. It is tied to the Ascendant by a very strong association, since it regards it by trine (II, 19, 10). In the list of names, the 9th house is called Deus (II, 20).
Vettius Valens likewise calls it the “place of the Sun god,” just before the Midheaven. In his chapter (Anthology, book II, trans. Mark Riley), benefics placed there make a pious native, regarded as a prophet; Mercury alone in aspect points toward divination. His list in book IV (chapter 12) gives for place IX: friendship, travel, benefits from foreigners, the god, the king, the powerful, astrology, oracles, divine apparitions, mystic and occult matters, associations.
William Lilly (Christian Astrology, book I, chapter VII) places in the 9th house long journeys and voyages beyond the seas, churchmen, dreams and visions, foreign countries, books and learning, church livings, and the wife's kindred. Its consignificators are Sagittarius and Jupiter: Jupiter placed there signifies, he says, a devout man. He adds that the Sun “rejoices” to be in this house, which is masculine and cadent.
Cadent, but the first of the cadent houses. In Lilly's ranking (book I, chapter VI), the 9th house comes before the succedent 2nd and 8th, and his table on page 115 gives it +2, where the 3rd house has only +1. Firmicus and Lilly thus reach the same middle rank by two routes: one through the aspect to the Ascendant, the other through the ranking of the houses.
The report's glossary sums up the 9th house in three words: beliefs, studies, travel. Firmicus's sacred becomes the belief system and the worldview; Lilly's clergy and church livings disappear with the society that sustained them.
In the balance of testimonies that AstralPro draws from Lilly's table, the 9th house counts neither for nor against: only the 12th, 8th and 6th houses appear there, as debilities. And AstralPro does not calculate the planetary joys: the Sun's joy in the 9th house remains a matter of tradition.
The house is drawn in Placidus, and its ruler is that of the sign on its cusp, according to modern rulerships. For a cusp in Scorpio, Aquarius or Pisces, this will be Pluto, Uranus or Neptune, where a traditional astrologer would read Mars, Saturn or Jupiter; in the other nine signs, both systems name the same ruler.
Chapter IV, Life Domains, has thirteen sections, and each one starts from specific houses: love from the 5th and 7th, work from the 10th, money from the 2nd and 8th, family from the 4th, friendships from the 11th, health from the 1st and 6th, the mind from the 3rd, wounds and the shadow side from the 12th. None starts from the 9th house.
It is therefore read elsewhere. The “House cusps” table in chapter I gives its cusp, its sign and its ruler. The positions table says which planets occupy it, and each one has its own block in chapter I. The block of its ruler says that it rules this house. And each time the report names it for the first time in a section, it adds a short appositive phrase recalling its domain, so that you do not have to look it up.
For Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), the 9th house begins at 22°06' Cancer. It holds no planet. Its ruler is the Moon, which lies at 27°09' Scorpio, in the 1st house. It is a Moon in fall, but it is also, in this nocturnal chart, the luminary that leads the chart. Camille's search for meaning thus runs through her most personal planet, placed in the house of the body and of presence. Since Cancer is the Moon's domicile in both systems, no astrologer would name another ruler here; but this Moon, in Scorpio, stands in the sign opposite its exaltation, Taurus, and its dignity paragraph says so.
Another detail: the whole of Leo is contained in her 9th house, without carrying any of its cusps. The Sun, ruler of Leo, therefore rules no house for Camille, even though tradition made the 9th house the Sun's own place and joy. Her Sun itself is in the 1st house, at 21°55' Scorpio.
A house that is empty in the natal chart can come alive elsewhere. In Camille's 2026 solar return, cast for Nantes, the positions table places Mars at 25°00' Leo and Jupiter at 25°43' Leo in the 9th house. The solar return is also calculated in Placidus, so its houses compare with those of the natal chart without any conversion. It is the houses of the solar return that its chapter II, “The arenas of the year,” reads to say where life plays out that year.
