Virgo is the sixth sign of the zodiac, an Earth sign of the mutable mode, running from about August 23 to September 22, at the end of summer. It is the sign of analysis, discernment and work done well. It also has a singular place in the dignity system: Mercury has both its domicile and its exaltation there. This page covers its dignities, its character, its decans and its place in a report, with the example of Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), whose Midheaven falls in Virgo.
Ptolemy gives Mercury two domiciles next to the houses of the luminaries, Gemini and Virgo (Tetrabiblos, book I, chapter 17). He also has it exalted in Virgo (I, 19): Mercury, being drier, is strengthened there because Virgo heralds the dry autumn, the reverse of moist Venus, exalted in Pisces where the moist spring begins. Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), book I, in the chapter on the nature of the twelve signs, sums it up: Virgo is “the house and exaltation of Mercury”, and he places the degree of exaltation at 15°.
The AstralPro engine gives only one word per planet, read in the order domicile, detriment, exaltation, fall. Mercury in Virgo is therefore marked “Domicile”. This is one of only two overlaps in the system, along with Mercury in Pisces, in both detriment and fall, marked “Detriment”; the engine checks at startup that no other exists.
The Virgo-Pisces axis is the one where Mercury and Venus trade places: Mercury, doubly strong in Virgo, is in detriment and in fall in Pisces; Venus, exalted in Pisces, is in fall in Virgo.
Lilly describes Virgo as an earthy sign, cold, melancholic, barren, feminine, nocturnal and southern, and among its places he lists a study where books are kept, cornfields and granaries. Ptolemy counts it among the bicorporeal signs (I, 11), those that share the nature of two seasons: these are our mutable signs. It shares Earth with Taurus and Capricorn.
You work through analysis and an eye for detail. You see what is off, you spot the mistake everyone else let slip, and you demand a lot, of yourself first. Your strengths: rigor, practical sense, reliability, modesty, a concrete intelligence that solves real problems. Your blind spots: perfectionism, worry, being quick to criticize, trouble delegating.
In love, you prove your attachment through everyday attentions rather than grand flights, and you observe for a long time before committing; the trap is looking for a perfect relationship that does not exist. At work, health, craftsmanship, accounting, publishing and analysis suit you; your lesson is not to drown in details to the point of losing sight of the whole, and to dare to claim your worth.
By element, with the modern ruler of the associated sign as sub-ruler:
As with Taurus, ancient and modern rulers coincide for these three Earth signs. Al-Biruni, in his Book of Instruction in the Elements of the Art of Astrology (1029, § 451), describes the Indian principle (the ruler of the sign, then that of the fifth, then that of the ninth), and his table gives the same sequence for Virgo: Mercury, Saturn, Venus.
The Chaldean faces (§ 449) give the Sun, Venus and Mercury. The two systems agree on none of the three thirds, and Venus, in fall in the sign, receives a face there. In your report, only the decan by element is written.
In Camille Morel's chart, Virgo holds the most visible angle: the Midheaven, cusp of the 10th house, is at 0°15' Virgo. Her cusps table gives Mercury as ruler, and Mercury is at 6°37' Scorpio, in the 12th house, retrograde. Professional life thus runs through a ruler placed in the most discreet house of the chart. In chapter IV, the Professional life section, which starts from the 10th house, comments on Sun sextile Uranus (orb 2°44').
Two bodies occupy the sign. Chiron is at 7°52' Virgo, in the 10th house, in the 1st decan, sub-ruler Mercury, in Venus terms (7-17°); it is conjunct the Midheaven with an orb of 7°37' and, like Lilith and the Nodes, stays outside the dignity system. Among the celestial points, Pholus is at 3°48' Virgo, in the 10th house, square Mars with an orb of 0°11'. Finally, the royal star Regulus, at 29°45' Leo, touches this Midheaven from the neighboring sign (orb 0°30').
Since none of Camille's planets is in Virgo, her Dignity column shows neither Mercury's domicile nor Venus's fall: her Venus is in detriment in Scorpio, her Mercury peregrine.
Three tables are enough. The positions table first: a planet in Virgo shows “Domicile” if it is Mercury, “Detriment” for Neptune, “Fall” for Venus, and a dash for the others, Jupiter included. The cusps table next: any house that begins in Virgo has Mercury as ruler, and for Camille, Mercury rules both the 10th house (Virgo) and the 8th house (Gemini). The dominants last, where a planet in Virgo counts toward Earth and toward the mutable signs.
In chapter I, the decan paragraph of each block completes the reading with the third of the sign and its sub-ruler: Mercury up to 10°, Saturn up to 20°, Venus beyond.
