1st house in astrology: life, the body, and the helm

The ancient texts give the 1st house the most fundamental matters of all. Vettius Valens, in the 2nd century, opens his list of the twelve places with it (Anthology, book IV, chapter 12): life, the helm, the body, the breath. Firmicus Maternus, in the 4th century, says the same thing in Latin (Mathesis, book II, chapter 19): this place contains life and spirit, the foundations of the whole nativity are known from it, and it is the first angle, “the framework and substance” of the entire chart.

In the 11th century, al-Biruni gives it the soul, life, length of life, upbringing and native country (The Book of Instruction in the Elements of the Art of Astrology, § 461). William Lilly, in 1647, reads in it the life, stature, complexion and shape of the person, and assigns it the head and face (Christian Astrology, book I, chapter VII, p. 50).

Today's astrology keeps this core and turns it toward psychology: the self, the body and appearance, temperament, spontaneous reactions, baseline energy, and the first impression you make.

The 1st house is angular, like the 4th, 7th and 10th. Lilly sums up the hierarchy in chapter VI (p. 48): the angles are the most powerful, the succedent houses come next, the cadent houses are weak. He even ranks the twelve houses in order of strength, and the 1st house comes first, ahead of the 10th, the 7th and the 4th. With equal dignity, he adds, a planet on the Ascendant acts more strongly than a planet in the 10th house.

Lilly also gives each house its “consignificators.” For the 1st, these are Aries, the first sign, and Saturn, the first of the planets in his order. He notes, finally, that Mercury rejoices in this house, because the house represents the head and Mercury the tongue, the imagination and the memory: well placed here, he makes good orators. This is the doctrine of the planetary joys, each planet having one house where it is happy.

Modern teaching tends instead to pair the 1st house with Aries and Mars, through the “natural wheel” that lines the houses up with the order of the signs. Aries is already in Lilly; Mars is not. Either way, these are analogies: your 1st house takes the color of your Ascendant sign, not that of Aries.

A planet in the 1st house blends its nature into the way you are present: it shows, and it expresses itself early and without detours. Several planets make the identity more pronounced or more composite. An empty 1st house is no lack: it is read through its ruler, the planet that governs the sign of the Ascendant. That ruler's house and sign tell where your presence is set in motion.

The nature of the planet sets the tone. Mars on the Ascendant gives a direct presence, quick to act; Saturn a reserve that holds itself in check; Venus a way of arriving that seeks agreement; the Moon a sensitivity that can be read on the face.

The boundary matters. Lilly teaches that a planet within 5° of a house cusp already receives the virtue of that house, even if it still lies in the previous one (chapter IV). AstralPro does not apply this margin: each body is placed in the house where its degree falls, and that is the house shown in the House column of the positions table.

The 1st house forms an axis with the 7th house, whose cusp is the Descendant: what you are on your own on one side, what you meet face to face on the other. The two are read together.

AstralPro calculates the houses in Placidus, for the natal chart, the solar return and the progressions. In this system, the cusp of the 1st house is always the Ascendant itself. The “House cusps” table, in chapter I, gives it on its first row, with four columns: House, Position, Sign, Ruler.

The ruler is taken from modern rulerships. The difference from tradition concerns three signs: a Scorpio Ascendant is ruled by Pluto (Mars for the ancients), an Aquarius Ascendant by Uranus (Saturn), a Pisces Ascendant by Neptune (Jupiter). For the other nine signs, both systems name the same ruler.

In chapter IV, Life Domains, the 1st house feeds two sections. Vitality & pace of life reads the 1st and 6th houses, their cusps, their rulers and their occupants, along with Chiron and Mars, in the sense of a temperament and a rhythm, never of a diagnosis. Anger & reaction reads Mars, its dispositor and the 1st house: what sets you off, and how it shows.

Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), has her Ascendant at 15°59' Scorpio. Her 1st house is therefore ruled by Pluto, and Pluto sits in it, at 25°17' Scorpio: it occupies both its modern domicile and the house it rules. The positions table marks it “Domicile,” and the dominants calculation puts it at the top of the planets (score 10.0). The same row also shows it combust, 3°23' from the Sun: dignity does not tell the whole story.

Four other bodies share this house: the Sun (21°55' Scorpio), the Moon (27°09' Scorpio), Mars (3°38' Sagittarius) and the North Node (3°00' Sagittarius). Mars plays a double role here, since it rules Camille's 5th and 6th houses. In Anger & reaction, the aspect selected is the Sun-Pluto conjunction, orb 3°23', applying; in Vitality & pace of life, Mars square the MC, orb 3°23'.

Mercury (6°37'), Venus (6°30') and Jupiter (0°50') are also in Scorpio, but before the degree of the Ascendant: they stay in the 12th house. Even Lilly's 5° margin would not bring them into the 1st house, since Mercury, the closest, is 9°22' from the Ascendant. The planet that tradition has rejoicing here, Mercury, therefore stands just behind the horizon, in the house of retreat.
