5th house in astrology: Good Fortune, the joy of Venus

Firmicus Maternus places the 5th house among the four places with a “second” power, just after the angles, and recalls its Greek name: agathe tyche, Good Fortune (Mathesis, book II, chapter 16). In chapter 19, he gives the reason: it is called Good Fortune because it is the place of Venus. He adds that it has a strong connection with the Ascendant, which it regards by trine.

Paul of Alexandria, in 378, writes that the star of Venus rejoices in this place “more than all the stars” (Introduction, chapter 24, cited from Dorian Greenbaum, The Daimon in Hellenistic Astrology, 2016). Lilly confirms it thirteen centuries later: Venus rejoices in the 5th house, because it is the house of pleasure, delight and merriment (Christian Astrology, book I, chapter VII, p. 53).

Valens judges the place protective: the benefics help a great deal there, and the malefics cannot do harm (Anthology, book II, chapter 12). Lilly disagrees: for him, the 5th house is wholly thwarted by Mars or Saturn, which show disobedient children there. The ancient authors do not speak with one voice, and this page does not decide between them.

The 5th house is first of all the house of children. Valens calls it “the place of children” and adds friendship, partnership, the accomplishment of a good deed (book IV, chapter 12). Firmicus looks there for the number of children and their quality. Paul of Alexandria specifies that the benefics there give happy offspring, while the malefics there work against children.

Lilly widens the list to pleasure: children, the woman with child, ambassadors, banquets, taverns, plays. Al-Biruni puts there children, friends, clothing, pleasure, joy (Book of Instruction, § 461).

The modern reading keeps this double thread: creation, leisure, play, love and romantic adventures, children, and everything that bears your signature. It is the house of self-expression.

Lilly gives the 5th house Leo and Venus as consignificators. The modern natural wheel keeps Leo but pairs it with the Sun, its ruler. Both are landmarks: in your chart, the color of the 5th house comes from the sign on its cusp.

The 5th house is succedent: it extends the angle of the 4th house and gives shape to what that angle has gathered. It faces the 11th house, the Good Daimon, where Paul of Alexandria has Jupiter rejoice. The two benefics thus share the two fortunate places that regard the Ascendant by trine and by sextile. On one side what you create for yourself, on the other what you share with a group. In Lilly's order of strength, the 5th house comes sixth, just after the 11th, its opposite, and ahead of all the cadent houses.

AstralPro calculates the cusps in Placidus and gives that of the 5th house in the “House cusps” table in chapter I, with its ruler in modern rulerships. A planet occupying the 5th house stands out there; an empty house is read through its ruler.

In chapter IV, the 5th house enters Love life, with Venus, Mars, the Descendant and the 7th house, Juno for commitment, Éros, and Psyché when it has a position only. It can also appear in Shadow side, which reads Lilith and the house where she falls.

A planet in the 5th house gives the area relief and intensity. Venus invites a rich love life and a strong pull toward the arts; Mars adds ardor in seduction as in creation; Jupiter amplifies the taste for play and spectacle; Saturn needs time before allowing itself pleasure. An empty 5th house works in a less spectacular way, and is read through the ruler of its cusp.

On the 5-11 axis, the balance plays out between what you create for yourself and what you offer the group. A heavily loaded 5th house can pull toward personal pleasure; a dominant 11th house can dilute individual expression in the collective.

For Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), the cusp of the 5th house is at 2°12' Aries. No planet occupies it. Its ruler, Mars, is the same in both systems; it lies at 3°38' Sagittarius, in the 1st house, and it also rules the 6th house, whose cusp falls in the same sign. This Mars is conjunct the North Node with an orb of 0°37', an aspect the report reads in Inner climate.

Two points occupy the house. Lilith, at 14°01' Aries, is read in Shadow side, along with her house: it is through her that Camille's 5th house enters that section. She forms a sesquiquadrate to the MC (orb 1°14') and a quincunx to the AC (orb 1°58'), and the Moon makes an applying sesquiquadrate to her (orb 1°52'). Ceres, at 24°41' Aries, is read in Family & roots.

Venus, which tradition has rejoicing here, is far from this house: at 6°30' Scorpio, in the 12th house, in detriment, but “in sect” in this nocturnal chart. For Love life, the report selects Saturn square Pluto, orb 1°24', and crosses the 5th house with Juno (12°27' Libra, 11th house) and Éros (10°25' Aquarius, 3rd house). Camille's 5th house is therefore read not through occupants, but through its ruler in the 1st house and through what Lilith places there.
