The Part of Fortune: the Hellenistic lot of ease

By Dorian Grimault, astrologer · Published · updated

The Part of Fortune is neither a planet nor an asteroid: it is a calculated point, one of the “lots” of Hellenistic astrology, which the medieval tradition handed down under the name “Arabic parts”. It combines three elements of your chart, the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant, to locate a place of ease, resources and well-being. In your AstralPro report, it closes the positions table and is read in a single domain: Money & resources.

A Hellenistic lot

Greek astrologers of the Hellenistic period used “lots” (in Greek klêroi): points obtained by projecting, from the Ascendant, the distance that separates two bodies. The most important is the lot of Fortune, associated with the body, material health and the circumstances that fall to you. Its twin is the lot of Spirit (or of the Daimon), which Vettius Valens associates with matters of the soul and the intellect. Valens and Paulus Alexandrinus give them a central place.

Arabic-speaking astrologers later multiplied the lots (for marriage, siblings, trade…), which explains why they are still called “Arabic parts”, even though the first two are much older.

The day formula, the night formula

For a day chart, the usual formula is: Ascendant + Moon − Sun. You measure the distance from the Sun to the Moon and project it from the Ascendant. For a night chart, several Hellenistic authors, including Dorotheus of Sidon and Vettius Valens, reverse it: Ascendant + Sun − Moon. The logic is that of sect: at night, the Moon becomes the luminary that leads the chart, and the count starts from her. Ptolemy, in the Tetrabiblos, does not reverse it: he keeps the same formula by day and by night, and from the Renaissance onward his treatise became the reference text of Western astrology. The Part of Spirit uses exactly the opposite of Fortune: where one takes the day formula, the other takes the night one.

What AstralPro does

AstralPro does not recalculate the Part of Fortune: it reads the position returned by the astronomical calculation service it queries, along with the “diurnal chart” or “nocturnal chart” information provided by that same service. The code does not rebuild the formula itself; judging from the positions it receives, it is the reversed night version that applies, and the example below lets you check it. If the service does not say whether the chart is diurnal or nocturnal, the report describes the Part of Fortune as neither one nor the other.

In the natal report, it appears on the last line of the positions table, separated from the bodies by a dotted rule, with its sign and house; the Dignity column carries a dash, because a calculated point has no dignity. It has no paragraph in chapter I and does not appear in “The complete aspect grid”. Its reading is reserved for chapter IV, in the Money & resources domain, which brings together House 2 and House 8, their rulers, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto. The brief sets the frame: the sign says how luck shows itself, the house where natural prosperity lies, and the report specifies whether the chart is diurnal or nocturnal. It also forbids any investment advice, any promise of gain and any financial forecast. The glossary at the end of the report defines it as a point calculated from the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant, which locates a place of ease and well-being.

Camille's example: Fortune in Scorpio, house 12

For Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), the chart is nocturnal: the Sun is below the Ascendant-Descendant axis. The data give the Part of Fortune at 10°44′ Scorpio, house 12, and the Part of Spirit at 21°13′ Scorpio, house 1. With an Ascendant at 15°59′ Scorpio, a Sun at 21°55′ Scorpio and a Moon at 27°09′ Scorpio, the night formula (Ascendant + Sun − Moon) does land on 10°44′ Scorpio; the day formula would give 21°13′ Scorpio, which is exactly the position of the Part of Spirit. The two lots have simply swapped places, as the nocturnal reversal requires.

In Camille's Money & resources domain, Fortune joins a strong pattern: House 2 (cusp 15°40′ Sagittarius) is ruled by Jupiter and House 8 (cusp 15°40′ Gemini) by Mercury, and both are in Scorpio, house 12, like Fortune. Ease here comes through what is worked on behind the scenes, away from view. The aspect assigned to this rubric in her data is Jupiter sextile MC, orb 0°35′.

What about the Part of Spirit?

The Part of Spirit is passed on in the natal report's data, but it has no line in the positions table and the natal report's brief assigns it no domain: it serves as a reference point, without a dedicated reading. It is the AstralPro Book that devotes a subsection to it, in its karmic chapter, as a mirror to Fortune: what the spirit pursues beyond comfort. In Camille's chart, Spirit in house 1 and Fortune in house 12 answer each other on either side of the Ascendant: what she pursues plays out in broad daylight, what falls to her is gathered behind the scenes.
