Sect in astrology: diurnal or nocturnal chart

By Dorian Grimault, astrologer · Published · updated

A daytime birth and a nighttime birth do not give the same reading, even with planets in the same signs. This is the idea of sect, a notion from Hellenistic astrology that divides the planets into two camps, that of the day and that of the night. It changes neither the signs nor the houses: it nuances the condition of six planets. Here is the rule AstralPro follows, its deliberate silences and the way it is written in your report, with Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), born at night.

Two camps, six planets

For the Hellenistic astrologers, Dorotheus of Sidon and Vettius Valens among others, a chart belongs to a sect (in Greek hairesis, the party): diurnal if the Sun is above the horizon at birth, nocturnal if it is below. Each camp has its luminary, its benefic and its malefic:

  • diurnal sect: the Sun, Jupiter, Saturn;
  • nocturnal sect: the Moon, Venus, Mars.

The principle is that each planet acts more at ease in its own camp. Jupiter gives more freely in a daytime chart; Saturn, a cold planet, is tempered there by the warmth of the Sun; Mars, a burning planet, is soothed by the night. In AstralPro reports, a planet that belongs to the chart's sect is said to be in sect, a planet of the other camp out of sect.

Those left outside

Mercury has no fixed camp: the tradition links it to the day when it rises before the Sun, to the night when it rises after. Its sect therefore depends on its position relative to the Sun, not on that of the chart, and AstralPro leaves it out of the scheme rather than give it one that would not be its own. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, unknown to the Ancients, have no sect. Nor do the North Node, Lilith, Chiron and the celestial points.

Sect never contradicts dignity. It qualifies a planet's condition, dignity states its means in its sign. A Mars in Libra in a nocturnal chart is in sect, and it remains in detriment: the two pieces of information are read together.

The 2° rule: when the report stays silent

Sect is decided by the Sun's position: above the horizon, in houses 7 to 12, the chart is diurnal; below, in houses 1 to 6, it is nocturnal. But near sunrise or sunset, a few minutes' difference in the birth time is enough to move the Sun from one side of the Ascendant-Descendant axis to the other.

The engine therefore measures the distance between the Sun and this axis. At less than 2°, roughly 4 to 9 minutes of clock time depending on place and season, it says nothing: no sect, no “in sect”, no note under the table. This concerns around 2% of births. AstralPro prefers this silence to a reading based on a sect that a birth time rounded to the quarter hour could reverse. It also affects triplicity, whose rulers change between day and night.

What the report says about it, and for whom

When the sect is established, a note under the positions table recalls that it nuances the condition of six bodies: the Sun, the Moon, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. In the text, the report does not mention it for each of them. It states it in two cases only:

  • for the luminary in sect (the Sun by day, the Moon by night), the one that leads the chart: once only, in its own portrait;
  • for a benefic or a malefic whose dignity is named (domicile, exaltation, detriment or fall): once per chapter, at its first mention.

Each case has its gloss. A benefic in sect gives freer and more generous help, out of sect more conditional help. A malefic in sect brings constructive difficulty, out of sect a difficulty that costs more and is less well integrated. A peregrine planet receives no mention of sect, nor does the luminary of the other camp. The glossary at the end of the report explains these words under the entry “Sect (in sect, out of sect)”.

Camille, a nocturnal chart

Camille was born on November 14, 1993 at 07:42, shortly before sunrise. Her Sun, at 21°55' Scorpio, is in house 1, below the horizon: the chart is nocturnal. It lies 5°56' from the Ascendant (15°59' Scorpio), well beyond the 2° threshold, so the sect can be stated.

Her Moon, at 27°09' Scorpio, is the luminary in sect: its portrait says once that it is in sect and that it is the one leading the chart, despite its fall. Her Venus, in detriment at 6°30' Scorpio, is in sect as well, and its detriment is read with freer and more generous help. These are the only two planets whose sect is written.

The others stay silent for precise reasons. Mars does belong to the nocturnal camp, but it is peregrine in Sagittarius: no named dignity, no mention. Jupiter and Saturn, of the diurnal camp, are peregrine too. The Sun, luminary of the other camp, receives none. Mercury is excluded, and Pluto, like Uranus and Neptune, has no sect.
