Psyche is the asteroid that modern astrology links to the soul within a relationship: the need to be known beyond appearances, trust that has to be earned, the way you perceive another person without words. In your AstralPro reports, where it is written Psyché, it is one of the ten celestial points and one of the five bodies that can appear as a position only. Unlike Eros, it remains present in the report of a person under 18.
The story comes to us from Apuleius, a Latin writer of the 2nd century, who placed it at the heart of his Metamorphoses. Psyche is a princess so beautiful that men neglect the altars of Venus. The jealous goddess sends her son Eros to punish her; he falls in love with her. He settles her in a palace where he joins her every night, on one condition: that she never try to see his face.
Urged on by her sisters, Psyche lights a lamp while he sleeps. A drop of burning oil wakes Eros, who flees. Then begins a series of trials imposed by Venus: sorting a mountain of seeds, bringing back the wool of dangerous sheep, drawing water from the Styx, going down to Proserpina. Psyche almost fails each time and succeeds anyway, helped by ants, a reed, an eagle. At the end of the tale, she becomes immortal and is united with Eros.
In Greek, psychè means life, soul, and also butterfly: the image of a metamorphosis.
Psyche was discovered on March 17, 1852 by Annibale de Gasparis, in Naples: it is the sixteenth asteroid ever identified. More than 200 kilometers in diameter, it is one of the large bodies of the main belt, which it travels around in about five years.
Measurements suggest that it is rich in metal, perhaps a fragment of the core of an ancient planetary embryo. To test this hypothesis, NASA sent a probe of the same name, launched in October 2023 and expected to arrive at the end of the decade. The body that bears the name of the soul may therefore be a laid-bare core, something astrologers do not fail to point out.
AstralPro sums Psyche up like this: soul bond, being seen in depth. Where Eros says what sets you alight, Psyche says what connects you: the need for an intimacy in which you are recognized, and the ability to perceive another person beyond what they show.
The tale also points to the sensitive areas. The lamp speaks of doubt, of the difficulty of trusting without seeing everything. The trials speak of a bond that has to be earned and rebuilt. Psyche's sign colours this way of loving in depth (through ideas, through care, through intensity), her house shows the area where this quest for recognition plays out most.
Astrologers often read Eros and Psyche together, as the two halves of the same story: desire and soul, impulse and recognition.
One last feature of the tale matters for the reading: Psyche goes through no trial alone. Ants sort the seeds, a reed tells her how to approach the sheep, an eagle draws the water of the Styx in her place. Many astrologers take from this the idea that Psyche also speaks of the help you agree to receive, and of the patience it takes for a deep bond to be rebuilt after a wound to trust.
With a contact, that is, a major aspect within 2° at most of the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, the Ascendant or the Midheaven, Psyché is developed in two or three sentences in the block of the body it touches, in chapter I. A contact to the Midheaven is read in the Ascendant block, since the Midheaven has no block of its own. The orb is copied into the “Aspects of the celestial points” sub-grid.
Without a contact, Psyché is one of the five bodies that AstralPro lets out as a position only: it appears in the positions table with this mention in the Dignity column, and the Love life rubric of chapter IV names it alongside Éros, when Éros is in the report, in one sentence about its sign and house, with no aspect and no development.
Psyché is not affected by the under-18 rule, which only removes Éros, Nessus and Dejanira: the need to be understood in depth speaks to every age.
For Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), Psyché sits at 12°30′ Sagittarius, in house 1, without any tight contact: it therefore appears in the table as a position only, and the Love life rubric names it, next to Éros, in one sentence giving its sign and house. In classical symbolism, Sagittarius links the depth of a bond to the search for meaning, to the wish to be met in one's convictions, and house 1 puts this need at the forefront of the personality.
One detail deserves attention: Dejanira is also in Sagittarius and in house 1 in Camille's chart, at 13°39′. The two bodies are neighbours, but the report does not link them. AstralPro calculates no aspect between two celestial points: closeness in degrees is not an aspect, and the report does not give voice to a link it has not measured.
