Nessus is a centaur that modern astrology links to dynamics of control within a relationship, and above all to the possibility of recognizing them and putting an end to them. It is a delicate point, and AstralPro treats it as such: careful wording, centred on vigilance and reclaiming personal power, a precise anchor in Shadow side, and complete removal from the report for people under 18.
Nessus is a centaur who works as a ferryman on the river Evenus. Heracles arrives at the water's edge with Deianira, his young wife. Nessus offers to carry Deianira to the other bank and, halfway across the ford, tries to carry her off by force. Heracles kills him with an arrow poisoned with the Hydra's venom.
Before dying, Nessus speaks to Deianira: let her keep a little of his blood, and it will ensure Heracles' faithfulness forever. It is a lie. Years later, Deianira soaks a tunic in it and gives it to her husband; the poison burns him to death. Nessus's violence has travelled through time, hidden in a gift. English has kept the expression “the shirt of Nessus” for a present that poisons the one who receives it.
Nessus was discovered on April 26, 1993 by the Spacewatch program team, a year after Pholus. It is one of the very first centaurs identified. Its highly eccentric orbit brings it in between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus and then carries it far beyond Neptune, for a revolution of about 121 years.
It is a small body a few dozen kilometers across, dark and reddish, known only through the light it reflects. As with the other centaurs, its path is not stable on an astronomical timescale: the giant planets will eventually alter it.
Melanie Reinhart, who has devoted several books to Chiron and the centaurs, links Nessus to toxic bargains replayed in relationships, to old grudges rising from the past, and to the work through which you regain power over yourself. AstralPro keeps a descriptive formula: dynamic of control within the bond; vigilance and reclaiming personal power.
The myth also highlights a delayed effect: Nessus's wrong takes effect years after his death, through a seemingly harmless object. That is why the reading of Nessus insists less on an event than on a mechanism that carries on, and on the moment you decide not to let it act any longer.
This choice has precise consequences for the way your report is written:
Nessus proves nothing and announces nothing. It is neither a diagnosis nor a sign that control has been or will be exerted. If you are living through a situation of coercive control, a birth chart does not replace the help of people trained for it.
Nessus has a single anchor: the Shadow side rubric of chapter IV, which reads house 12, Lilith and the house it falls in, Pluto and Neptune. With a contact (a major aspect within 2° at most of the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, the Ascendant or the Midheaven), its orb appears in the “Aspects of the celestial points” sub-grid and the rubric gives it two or three sentences. Without a contact, since Shadow side names it, it comes out as a position only: one sentence, its sign and house, nothing more.
For a person under 18, Nessus is removed from the report, from the text as well as the table, even if it forms a very tight contact. This decision comes before the contact test: a dynamic of control has no place in a teenager's portrait, however precise the aspect.
The careful wording changes nothing about its presence: Nessus appears or does not appear according to the same rule as the other bodies. It only changes the way it is written.
For Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data), Nessus sits at 11°27′ Scorpio, in house 12. It forms no major aspect within 2° of her seven targets: it is a position only. Her Ascendant (15°59′ Scorpio) is close, but not close enough for a contact to be retained.
Since Camille is over 18, Nessus appears in the table with the mention “position only”, and Shadow side mentions it in one sentence. This rubric already reads her house 12, where Mercury, Venus and Jupiter sit: the sentence on Nessus places the body in this discreet sector of the chart and turns it toward vigilance, without drawing a portrait or a story from it.
