Chariklo in astrology: boundaries and the space to heal

By Dorian Grimault, astrologer · Published · updated

Chariklo is a small body of the outer solar system, a centaur travelling between Saturn and Uranus, and in Greek mythology the wife of Chiron. Where Chiron points to the wound and the knowledge that comes out of it, Chariklo points to something else: the presence that surrounds, the limit that protects, the calm space in which healing becomes possible. In your AstralPro report, she is one of the ten celestial points and has a precise place: the “Wounds & repair” domain. This page explains where she comes from, what she symbolizes and how the engine decides whether or not to name her.

A centaur with rings

Chariklo (number 10199 in the minor body catalogue) was discovered in February 1997 by the Spacewatch program, in Arizona. With a diameter of about 250 kilometers, she is the largest known centaur. Centaurs are icy bodies whose orbits cross those of the giant planets: Chariklo's lies between Saturn and Uranus, and she takes about sixty years to go around the zodiac.

In 2013, while watching Chariklo pass in front of a distant star, astronomers saw the star's light flicker twice before and after the body itself: Chariklo has two narrow rings. It was the first time rings had been found around such a small object. For the astrologers who work with her, the image speaks for itself: a modest body surrounded by sharp circles, which draw an outline without enclosing.

Chiron's wife in the myth

In the Greek tradition, Chariklo is a nymph, wife of the centaur Chiron, with whom she lives in a cave on Mount Pelion. Chiron raises the children that heroic families entrust to him: Achilles, Jason and Asclepius grow up with him, and in Pindar, Jason says he comes from the cave of Chariklo and Philyra. Chiron teaches medicine, music and hunting; Chariklo holds the place, offering shelter and continuity. She is also the mother of Ocyrhoe, a young woman gifted with prophecy.

The myth says little about her, and that is already a clue. Chariklo does not act through great deeds: she makes possible what others accomplish.

What Chariklo symbolizes

Contemporary centaur astrology, still young and without a single doctrine, associates Chariklo with three themes that hold together:

  • Boundaries: knowing where you end and the other begins, setting a limit without closing the door.
  • The space for healing: the setting, the place or the relationship in which a wound can be spoken without being made worse.
  • The presence that holds: the ability to accompany without taking over, to be there without directing.

Chiron and Chariklo thus form a reading pair. Chiron answers the question “what hurts, and what have I learned from it?”. Chariklo answers another: “what do I need around me for this to be repaired?”. Depending on her sign and house, she describes the kind of shelter that suits you: a rhythm, a place, a bond, a clear rule.

How AstralPro handles Chariklo

AstralPro calculates Chariklo's position for the minute of your birth, in the same zodiac and the same house system (Placidus) as the rest of your chart. Then two cases arise, according to a single rule that applies to the text, the table and the checks:

  • Chariklo has a tight contact: a major aspect (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition) within an orb of 2° at most with your Sun, your Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, your Ascendant or your Midheaven. The report develops her in two or three sentences and gives the exact orb. The contact appears in the small “Aspects of the celestial points” grid, below the complete aspect grid.
  • Chariklo has no contact: she is one of the five points that a life domain names explicitly (along with Éros, Psyché, Nessus and Dejanira). She then appears as a “position only”: a single sentence, her sign and house, with no aspect and no development. The positions table carries the mention “position only” in the Dignity column.

In both cases, her anchor is the same: the “Wounds & repair” domain of chapter IV, alongside Chiron, Saturn, the Moon and house 12. This is an AstralPro choice: a celestial point has only one place of reading in the report, so that it is neither forgotten nor repeated. Like every celestial point, Chariklo has no dignity: the Dignity column shows a simple dash when she has a contact.

Camille Morel's example

Take Camille Morel, AstralPro's sample chart (fictional data). Her positions table places Chariklo at 20°07' Cancer, in house 8, with the ℞ symbol: Chariklo was retrograde at her birth. The engine detects a tight contact: Chariklo trine Sun, orb 1°47'. Her Sun is at 21°55' Scorpio, in house 1.

This contact appears in the “Aspects of the celestial points” grid (columns Point, Aspect, Body, Orb), and Chariklo is read in the “Wounds & repair” domain. For Camille, this domain also draws on the aspect Venus sextile Chiron (orb 1°22'), with Chiron at 7°52' Virgo in house 10. The reading then connects two threads: the way Camille has learned to take care of her relationships, and the need for a protected intimate space (Cancer, house 8) so that her Sun, highly exposed in house 1, can settle. The trine indicates an easy flow between the two.

If Chariklo had had no contact, Camille's report would have mentioned her in one sentence in the same domain, and the table would have shown “position only”.
