The sextile is a major astrological aspect formed when two planets are 60° apart in the birth chart, meaning one sixth of the zodiac wheel. Harmonious by nature, it does not produce its effects automatically: it calls for conscious activation, for deliberate movement. As one of the major aspects, it plays a structuring role in chart interpretation and reflects a fluid, cooperative relationship between two planetary functions.
The sextile results from dividing the 360° circle by six, producing an exact angle of 60°. Geometrically, it corresponds to the interval between two signs separated by two zodiac positions, and it most often links compatible elements, Air and Fire or Water and Earth, which encourages a natural flow of energy between the two planets involved.
Its nature is harmonious, but unlike the trine, this harmony is not passive: it resembles an open door rather than a ready-made path. The two planetary functions understand each other, mutually stimulate one another, and offer genuine resources, provided you take the step of drawing on them. The sextile creates a dynamic of active cooperation, an aptitude, a latent ease that waits to be put to use.
Reading a sextile means identifying the two planetary functions at play and understanding how they can support each other. Neither one dominates: they engage as equals, each bringing what the other can use. The central question is: how do these two principles reinforce each other when you set them in motion?
Take the example of a Sun sextile Moon. The Sun represents conscious will, identity in the making, the drive toward self-expression. The Moon embodies emotional needs, instinctive reflexes, and the need for inner security. With a sextile between them, these two forces are not in friction: the person has the ability to align their deeper aspirations with their personal drives without major conflict between head and heart. It is not an automatic guarantee of balance, but a available resource, a potential inner coherence that needs to be consciously cultivated.
The orb refers to the margin of tolerance around the exact 60° angle. A sextile is called exact when the two planets are precisely 60° apart: that is when the aspect expresses its full intensity. The tighter the orb, the stronger, more present, and more readable the relationship between the two planets is in the chart. Conversely, a wider gap weakens the connection without eliminating it entirely.
As a major aspect, the sextile allows a relatively wide orb, generally around 4°, meaning an angle between 56° and 64° remains significant. This value is, however, indicative: it varies depending on the astrological school and the planets involved. The luminaries, Sun and Moon, are often granted a slightly wider orb, while slower planets may be treated with greater strictness. It is useful to specify the orb you use in order to maintain consistent interpretation throughout the entire chart.
